Closing the Digital Divide in Assessments: Ensuring Equitable Outcomes for Adult Learners

As advancements in AI and technology continue to reshape how assessments are delivered, the focus often remains on innovation and convenience. However, a critical issue that requires attention is the digital divide—the gap between those with access to technology and those without. For adult learners from low-resource backgrounds, the lack of access to reliable technology can significantly impact their ability to participate in assessments and advance their skills. Addressing these inequalities is essential to ensuring that every learner can achieve equitable outcomes, regardless of their circumstances.

Understanding the Digital Divide’s Impact on Learners

Many adult learners face considerable challenges due to the digital divide. While remote assessments have created new opportunities, unreliable access to computers or stable internet connections can leave learners from lower-income areas at a distinct disadvantage. For these individuals, gaining qualifications, improving their skills, or progressing their careers can feel out of reach simply due to technological barriers.

At Kryterion, we believe that innovation should be accessible to everyone. We are committed to bridging this digital gap by developing solutions that cater to technologically well-equipped learners while also considering those with more limited access.

Kryterion’s Dual-Camera Feature: Expanding Access

A key part of our strategy to close the digital divide is Kryterion’s new dual-camera feature, designed to expand access to secure remote proctoring. While not everyone may have a personal computer, smartphones have become ubiquitous, even in some of the world’s most impoverished regions. With most people owning a smartphone, learners can use Kryterion’s dual-camera feature by using their smartphone as a secondary camera, while accessing a local library’s computer or Wi-Fi for the primary device during assessments.

This innovative approach ensures that assessments remain secure and accessible. By leveraging technology that people are more likely to have—such as a smartphone—Kryterion is empowering learners to overcome the barriers posed by the digital divide.

Utilising Local Resources and Global Test Centres

Kryterion has partnered with local resources, such as community libraries, which often provide free computer access and internet connectivity for learners who may not have smartphones or reliable internet at home. Adult learners can visit these facilities, use the available technology, and combine it with their smartphones to complete their assessments securely and reliably.

In areas where even these resources may be limited, Kryterion’s global network of test centres provides an alternative. With locations worldwide, including regions with limited technological infrastructure, these centres offer a safe and supportive environment for learners to take in-person assessments.

Fostering a Future of Fairness

As technology continues to evolve, addressing the digital divide will remain a key focus as technology develops to ensure fair and equitable assessments. At Kryterion, we are committed to an inclusive approach that empowers learners from all backgrounds. Whether through our dual-camera feature, community resource partnerships, or our global network of test centres, we are taking concrete steps to ensure that no one is left behind due to technological limitations.

By working together to close the digital divide, we can create a future where all learners, regardless of their access to technology, have the opportunity to succeed. At Kryterion, our mission is to deliver secure, accessible, and reliable assessment solutions to everyone, everywhere.
