What We Learned at ATD26: Why Leadership and Adaptability Are the True Drivers of the Future of Work

Recently, the Association for Talent Development held its annual conference, ATD26, in Los Angeles, CA, and Kryterion joined the conversation around the future of talent development. Between the compelling keynote sessions, research presentations, deep-dive case studies, and the many engaging conversations we had at the Kryterion booth, a few critical themes emerged. Here is what we learned at ATD26.

Shifting Employee Expectations

As the workplace evolves, so too do the needs of the people powering it. Conversations at ATD26 highlighted exactly what organizations are seeing across their workforce right now. Today’s employees are looking for more. They expect their leadership to provide meaningful guidance that includes:

  • Transparency and Honesty: They want leaders who tell it like it is.
  • AI Clarity: They are looking for clear communication on exactly how artificial intelligence will impact their daily jobs and long-term careers.
  • Coaches, Not Taskmasters: They highly value managers who coach, communicate, and develop people, rather than those who just supervise output.
  • Empathy for Burnout: They expect managers to help them navigate change fatigue and burnout, not just manage their tasks.

The AI Reality: Adoption vs. Readiness

It’s no secret that AI was a massive topic at ATD26. However, the stark reality was acknowledged that AI adoption is moving significantly faster than employee readiness.

The organizations actually succeeding with AI are not simply deploying tools faster than their competitors. Instead, they are taking a human-centric approach to implementation. They’re actively helping their employees understand how work is fundamentally changing, identifying where human judgment still matters most, and teaching teams how to adapt successfully alongside these new technologies.

The Real Root of Change Resistance

Across multiple sessions and panel discussions, several workforce and leadership themes were consistent. One of the most profound realizations shared by experts is that employees are not resisting change as much as they are resisting unclear change.

High-performing companies are recognizing this and responding by redesigning work and communication flows, rather than simply throwing new AI tools into the mix. The strongest leaders today are actively focused on:

  • Creating environments of psychological safety.
  • Establishing clearer priorities.
  • Fostering stronger team connections.

Looking Ahead

Overall, the insights from ATD26 heavily reinforced a vital lesson for every organization. The future of work is not just a technology conversation. It is, fundamentally, a leadership and organizational adaptability conversation. As we move forward, empowering leaders to guide their teams through uncertainty with clarity and trust will be the ultimate competitive advantage.

The organizations succeeding right now are not necessarily the ones with the most advanced technology or the biggest budgets. Instead, they are the organizations whose leaders create clarity, trust, adaptability, and growth in the midst of constant change.
