Each evening at sundown from April to November, Austin’s most well-known seasonal guests stream from the underside of the Congress Avenue bridge.
They race to heights of 10,000 feet in frenetic, undulating columns that sound like the rush of a white-water river.
For the next 12 hours, Austin’s 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats will own the night.
Flying at speeds of nearly 40 miles per hour and covering distances of 100 miles per night, the bats will use echo-location, a kind of sonar, to find and consume more than 20 TONS of flying insects, including species that carry the harmful Zika and West Nile viruses and others that plague farmers, ranchers and health officials.
Once considered a public hazard, the bats have become a point of civic pride as well as a popular tourist attraction pumping an estimated $10 million into the local economy each year.
Austin provides the bridge. The bats eat the insects s and generate the bucks. What’s not to love?
